“To walk in nature is to witness a thousand miracles.”
Hailed as the Queen City of the South, Cebu City is an amazingly captivating province in the Philippines. Attracting about two million travelers annually from all corners of the world, Cebu has much to offer in terms of sights, sceneries, and activities. From the gorgeous beaches with fine powder-like sand to the majestic mountains, this small island at the heart of the Philippines seemingly has it all.
However, one of the most compelling reasons why people keep coming back to Cebu is because of the sprawling mountains and beautiful vistas. These mountains hold great appeal as they are an excellent destination for beginner trekkers and seasoned hikers who are liking for challenging trails as well. Needless to say, hiking is one of the most popular things to do in Cebu. Living in Cebu means that you are lucky to live close to stunning white beaches, crystal clear waterfalls and imposing mountains–all of which are begging to be explored. If you have always wanted to try hiking, then this is your chance. Whether you are an avid hiker or a novice trying to get a good feel of the activity, there is an appropriate hiking trail for you in Cebu.
Below is a list of the best hiking places in Cebu, and regardless of what kind of hiker or trekker you are, you will no doubt feel a sense of accomplishment once you reach the peaks of any of these magnificent mountains.
1.) Sirao Peak
Beginner hikers should begin their foray into the world of hiking at Sirao Peak, which is also known as Mount Sibugay in Sibugay, Cebu. Known as the “beginners’ favorite mountain,” Sirao Peak is one of the most popular hiking trails in the city. Apart from being an easy trek compared to most mountain trails, hiking in Sirao means that you also get a sightseeing pass through rivers and some waterfalls on your way to the peak. At its peak, you are greeted with a panoramic view of the city, and if you start hiking in the afternoon, you might just be able to catch the sunset at the top. If you wish to extend your stay, there is a campsite at the peak where you can set up camp and sleep under the stars by nightfall.
2.) Casino Peak Cebu
Also known as Lugsangan Peak, Casino Peak is a favorite spot among photographers and hiking enthusiasts, and for a good reason: There is such a captivating view at the top. The hiking trail is a favorite among intrepid hikers, adventurous travelers, and seasoned trekkers. It is well-known for its “Chocolate Hill-Like mounds,” which would make an excellent backdrop for any photos you take at the top.
3.) Mt. Mago
Mt. Mago is another mountain frequented by beginners. Located in Carmen, Cebu, this is one of the hiking trails in this list that allows you to hike through 3 different cities through the trek as Danao, Tuburan, and Carmen share the mountain. The mountain rises at 755 meters above sea level. Novice hikers need not worry, though, as the trails are easy up to the mountain, making it one of the no-frills hiking trails that are perfect for its beginners. Once you reach the peak, a sea of clouds awaits you. However, you need to ensure that you are hiking during the right season to witness such as picturesque event.
4.) Bocaue Peak
As one of the most accessible hiking trails in the city, getting to Bocaue Peak does not require a drive out of the city. Be wary, though; the trail going up is a little challenging, unlike the drive getting to the jump-off point. However, finishing the trail will be worth it, as reaching the top means getting greeted with a 360-degree view of the city and its surrounding mountains. For those who wish to experience an exhilarating and thrilling climb, Bocaue Peak is the perfect spot. Apart from giving yourself a little challenge, the place is also great for snapping gorgeous photos.
5.) Mt. Manunggal
If you wish to experience single-degree weather, you need not fly out of Cebu and go to Baguio. You can enjoy the same experience in Cebu at Mt. Manunggal in Balamban, Cebu. In fact, the place reminds people of Baguio so much that it has been given the moniker “Little Baguio of Cebu.” Beyond the typical mountain hiking experience, however, visitors can also enjoy attractions such as Mt. Manunggal Eco-Adventure, which is reminiscent of Baguio’s Treetop Adventure. The climb up to the summit is quite difficult, especially for beginner hikers. However, the trek will be worth it as waiting for you at the top is lush foliage peppered with colorful wildflowers that will certainly be the cherry on top of the wonderful experience. It is also worth noting that this trail passes through pine groves which can remind you of Baguio. Indeed, this is a one-of-a-kind experience that every hiker needs to include in their list.
